124 – Washington DC abandons troops on the ground – World War II – January 9, 1942
The U.S. government realizes that it cannot send aid to relieve U.S. and Filipino forces in the Philippines, but it does not tell those forces that. Meanwhile, in the USSR, a massive Red Army offensive against entrenched German forces begins along the entire front line. The Germans, however, withdrew to North Africa to consolidate their position. The Japanese enter Manila and advance into Malaya, but are forced to retreat to China.
