BACKGROUND: The Ford Galaxie is a full-size automobile built in the United States of America by Ford for model years 1959 through 1974. The name was used for high-end models of Ford's full-size line from 1958 to 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the enthusiasm surrounding the space race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with /"500/" and /"500/XL/" denoting the top series. Ford stated in its sales literature that XL stood for /"Xtra Lively/". In 1962, the new premium Galaxie 500 line (two-door sedan and hardtop, four-door sedan and hardtop and "Sunliner" models) offered more luxurious interiors, more exterior chrome trim, and some items additional luxuries on top of what was standard on simpler Galaxie models. This 1961 Ford Galaxie sedan is now on its second owner and was in the same family until 2 years ago. The consignor states that this Galaxie is an original survivor with a matching 352 V-8 engine and Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission that has never been rebuilt. To make it road worthy, he rebuilt the carburetor, redid the brakes, master cylinder, battery, tires and exhaust system. The owner says he wanted to keep it as original as possible – and so he left the shock absorbers in place – because they still work! So you're looking at something unique since it only has 39,000 miles on the odometer. If the miles don't excite you, maybe the quality of the interior maintenance will! The interior is two-tone black and white vinyl, it is in very good condition and shows no fading or wear – the carpet was recently replaced. The exterior is the original black paint which is very visible – and has a small amount of patina on the bumpers – for a 58 year old car – it looks great!
