Winston secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion. He meets Julia, another dissident, and they begin a forbidden affair. However, their relationship is doomed, as they are betrayed by a Party spy and captured by the Thought Police. Winston is tortured and brainwashed into loving Big Brother, the mysterious leader of the Party. The novel explores themes such as totalitarianism, propaganda, surveillance, censorship, language and human nature.
