This story was published in 1923. It is one of 12 stories by Arthur Conan Doyle in the collection The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.

It's an unusual story. It has been decried as having a ridiculous science fiction element, lacking the solid basis in reality that Conan Doyle was known for. However, by 1923, the activities of doctors like Voronoff were beginning to attract attention. I rather like the story of the academic and his desperate quest.
