When modeling agencies look for new models to sign, they first check a very specific set of physical criteria. Your appearance is certainly the first thing agents evaluate; after all, your face and body are the backdrop to every fashion product a potential customer is trying to sell. You are the vehicle that takes the product from idea to sale, a way for a potential consumer to imagine themselves wearing it.
First and foremost, models must generally meet height requirements (women 5'8 – 5'11 and men 5'11 – 6'3). For the most part, thinner than average women are the most in demand. Again, we're talking about mainstream models here, not niche models such as petite or curved models.
This is one of the reasons the modeling industry has such a bad reputation: Critics say the appeal to thin models promotes an unhealthy and unrealistic body image. While this criticism may be valid, the fashion industry's love affair with skinny girls is not part of a conspiracy against average-sized bodies. It's important to remember that a model's job is to sell what she wears. Clothes hang better on a slim body and let fashion itself take over.
