Following the Paleolithic – the vast period that encompassed most of human evolution throughout the Pleistocene Epoch – the world was plunged into a period of relative warming following the end of the last known ice age under the name of Mesolithic, or “middle stone”. age'. The megafauna of the Pleistocene were virtually extinct as the world entered the Mesolithic, a period that saw great advances in human culture and technology.
During the Mesolithic era, the only human species left on the planet was Homo sapiens – our own species. It is important to note, however, that different parts of the world entered the Mesolithic period at different times. Almost everything we know about this period focuses on sites discovered in Eurasia and North Africa. Western Asia is known to have entered the Mesolithic about twenty thousand years ago and progressed to the Neolithic about ten thousand years ago.
