Jack the Ripper targeted prostitutes who worked in the poor areas of Whitechapel. Although the exact number of his victims is debated, it is generally accepted that he murdered at least five women. These victims, known as the “canonical five”, are:
Mary Ann Nichols (August 31, 1888): Nichols, also known as Polly, was the first victim attributed to Jack the Ripper. His body was discovered in Buck's Row (now Durward Street). She had been lacerated in the throat and abdomen.
Annie Chapman (September 8, 1888): Chapman was found murdered in the courtyard of 29 Hanbury Street. His throat was slit and his abdomen mutilated. This case has intensified fear and panic within the community.
Elizabeth Stride (September 30, 1888): Stride's body was discovered at Dutfield's Yard. Unlike previous victims, his throat was slit, but his body was not further mutilated. Some believe the killer was interrupted during this attack.
Catherine Eddowes (also known as Kate; September 30, 1888): Eddowes was killed the same night as Elizabeth Stride, but her body was discovered in Miter Square. She suffered numerous facial mutilations and her throat and abdomen were lacerated.
Mary Jane Kelly (November 9, 1888): Kelly's murder was particularly brutal. His body was found in his bedroom at Miller's Court. Kelly's face was almost unrecognizable due to extensive mutilation and her body was eviscerated.
These five victims, whose murders were attributed to Jack the Ripper, played an important role in shaping the legend and notoriety of the infamous serial killer. The mystery surrounding Jack the Ripper's identity and the brutal nature of the crimes continue to captivate and intrigue people even today.
