American democracy and the crisis of majority rule
America's contemporary democratic situation has its origins in a historically incomplete democratization. Born in a pre-democratic era, the constitution that balances majority rule and minority rights has created dilemmas that remain unresolved. By placing the United States in comparative perspective, Daniel Ziblatt, professor of government at Harvard University, offers new perspectives on what should be "out of reach of majorities" – and what should not – making the case of a more complete democracy as an antidote to the perils of democracy. our era. Ziblatt is also director of the Transformations of Democracy group at the WZB Social Science Center in Berlin. He is the author of four books, including “How Democracies Die,” co-written with Steve Levitsky, a New York Times bestseller. His latest book co-written with Steven Levitsky is entitled /"Tyranny of the Minority./" Recorded on 06/12/2023. [3/2024] [Show ID: 39237]
