In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov was deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik court and sentenced to house arrest at the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin.

Rostov, an indomitable man of learning and spirit, has never worked a day in his life and must now live in an attic room as some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the gates of the hotel.

Unexpectedly, her reduced circumstances allow her access to a much larger world of emotional discovery.
