Anatomy of a Murder is a 1959 crime drama film produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The screenplay by Wendell Mayes was based on the 1958 novel of the same name written by Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker.

Two humble former prosecutors from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Paul Biegler (James Stewart) and Parnell McCarthy (Arthur O'Connell), take on the case of U.S. Army Lt. Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara), accused of shot and killed Thunder. The owner of the Bay Inn, Barney Quill, after Quill allegedly beat and raped Paul's wife, Laura (Lee Remick).

With little memory of the actual murder, Paul's only defense is "irresistible impulse."
