Ashes began development in 2016 in Unreal Engine 4, but in late 2021 it upgraded its engine to Unreal 5 to utilize the latest gaming technology advancements such as nanite, lumen, and a more efficient development pipeline . In terms of funding the game successfully launched in 2017, but the vast majority of the game's funding comes from creative director Steven Sharif, a successful entrepreneur who, like most of us, is a lifelong MMO fan and is unhappy with the current state of the MMORPG genre. Ashes Of Creation is fully funded until completion and although it offers paid access to Alpha and Beta testing, it does not rely on these funds to complete development.
