On the beaches of Normandy, two summers before D-Day, the Allies attempted an almost forgotten landing. Of the approximately seven thousand Allied troops sent ashore, only a few hundred survived the terrible massacre, and the reason for the debacle was lack of recognition. The shore turned out to be impassable for tanks. The Nazis had hidden obstacles in unexpected places. The fortifications were more numerous and more deadly than anyone imagined. The Allies knew they had to fight Hitler on the European continent to end the war, but they could not afford to become unprepared. A small group of eccentric researchers, experimenting on themselves from inside pressure tanks amid London air raids, explored the deadly science needed to field critical reconnaissance ships and underwater breathing apparatus which would enable the dramatic and historic success of the Allies. during the next big beach landing: D-Day. Based on recently declassified top secret documents, this is the story of a group of maverick underwater researchers who, without their laboratory and war work , neither SEALs nor submarines could prowl the ocean as they do today.
