Most people think that the Civil War ended with the surrender at Appomattox. They think badly.

The war actually continued for two more weeks until Union General William Tecumseh Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston were able to come to terms at Bennett Place, North Carolina.

However, infighting on both sides threatens peace negotiations. National Historic Site expert James A. Garfield explains how the fragile ceasefire was nearly undermined by dueling targets and the assassination of President Lincoln.
