BOOK DESCRIPTION

In All Under Heaven, 16-year-old Johanna fled Cambaluc and her murderous stepmother to join her uncle's caravan heading west on the Silk Road. With his adopted brother Jaufre and a few loyal companions, they reached the roof of the Terak World Pass, separating Mongol China from the scattered sheikhs of the Persian Empire. That's when disaster struck. In a climactic skirmish, Johanna and her stallion, North Wind, were kidnapped and Jaufre was left for dead. Today, in By the Middle Sea, Johanna is a prisoner in Talikan's harem, while Baron Ogodei's army pillages the countryside and prepares to sack the small Persian enclave. Hundreds of leagues to the south, in Kabul, Jaufre is recovering from his near-fatal wound. Their journey has taken them across a continent, but an equal distance still separates them from Gaza, where Johanna and Jaufre once planned to take the boat to Venice and the family shrine of Johanna's grandfather. Gaza and Venice: two cities located on opposite shores of the Middle Sea which together open a door to the West. For Johanna and Jaufre, it is a passage that will shape their destiny, if they manage to achieve it.
