Synopsis:- Chan is on his way back after finishing the London case – they always mentioned the previous case – to go on a "vacation/" to Paris, but that's just a way of making people believe that he is innocently there. He is on a case for some London bankers and clients who say that some bonds of the Lamartine Bank in Paris are falsified, so they have hired Chan to solve the case. Chan is on his way to meet the new ward of the director of Banque Lamartine, Paul. A blind man named Marcel Xavier approaches him and asks him for change. After a police officer escorts Xavier away, Chan calls his assistant, Nardi, who promises to talk to him later about the new information she discovered. He meets Victor Descartes, the ward of Mr. Lamartine who is preparing to become owner of the bank. Chan also meets Victor's friends: Max Corday, an alcoholic painter and his girlfriend, and Yvette Lamartine, Mr. Lamartine's daughter. Victor tells Chan that Yvette is the special one: the two are engaged.
That night, Chan, Max and his girlfriend, Yvette, and Victor go to a cafe/club, where Nardi works as a dancer. After her performance, she is thrown into a room by her dance partner (part of the routine), where Marcel murders her by throwing a knife at her. His last words to Chan ask him to look in his apartment, where he finds a letter hidden in a cuckoo clock which explains that Albert is spending beyond his income.
As Chan leaves Nardi's house, Marcel throws a giant stone in an attempt to kill him, but fails. He returns home and reveals his secret to Lee, his number one son. That night, another attempt is made on Chan's life, this time with another thrown knife. However, Chan foiled the culprit by throwing pillows on his bed. The next morning, he interviews Paul Lamartine. As he leaves, he sees Xavier making a scene, because he feels that the bank is stealing his money. His escort makes him leave, but not before threatening everyone. Chan asks Lee to do some spy work in town. Chan is then approached by his old friend, an inspector. They will eat together.
