In her extraordinary first feature film which won her an award for best direction in international competition at IDFA 2021, Vietnamese filmmaker Diễm Hà Lệ places her camera at the heart of a family, members of the indigenous Hmong ethnic minority, living in the mountainous region of the north of the country. Here, Di, a cherubic 12-year-old, plays with his friends among the mist-shrouded hills and goes to school, one of the first generations of his people to have such access to education. However, the free-spirited Di is also forced into adulthood prematurely when she is subjected to a troubling marriage custom that creates divisions in her family and threatens to forever alter her future. Tender but hard to shake, Diễm's documentary immerses the viewer in a traditional world on the edge of modernity, giving us the privilege of knowing a young woman caught in the middle.
