Civil rights leader Medgar Evers killed 55 years ago in Mississippi

June 12 marks a sad anniversary in the history of civil rights in the United States. On this date in 1963, NAACP activist and field secretary Medgar Evers was shot in the back outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi. Evers' funeral became a rallying point for the civil rights movement, and Martin Luther King helped lead the procession.
