She fled the war in Syria at the age of 14, with her family, to a refugee camp in Jordan. She only took what she considered absolutely essential: her schoolbooks. For Muzoon Almellehan, education means hope and a future. During her three years spent in refugee camps, she fought to raise awareness among families about the importance of education. She tells not only her own story, or that of Syrian children, but also that of millions of children around the world who do not have a voice. Her inspiring story, courage, and fervent advocacy for education led many to call her the “Syrian Malala.” In 2017, she became the first UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to be granted refugee status. /"When we deny children their right to education, we prevent them from having hope, from achieving their goals and from one day returning to their country to rebuild it/," she says.
