Confessions of an Economic Hitman – Short documentary by John Perkins
According to Perkins, he began writing Confessions of an Economic Hitman in the 1980s, but "threats or bribes always convinced him to stop."

According to his book, Perkins' function was to convince the political and financial leaders of underdeveloped countries to accept enormous development loans from institutions like the World Bank and USAID. Saddled with debts they could not hope to pay, these countries were forced to accept political pressure from the United States on various issues. Perkins argues in his book that developing countries have been politically neutralized, their wealth gaps have widened, and their economies have been crippled in the long term. As such, Perkins recounts his meetings with prominent figures, including Graham Greene and Omar Torrijos. Perkins describes the role of an EHM as follows:

Economic hitmen (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who defraud billions of dollars from countries around the world. They funnel money from the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the natural resources of the planet. Their tools included fraudulent financial reporting, rigged elections, bribery, extortion, sex and murder. They are playing a game as old as empire, but which has taken on new and terrifying dimensions in the age of globalization.

Perkins says the proposed conditions for debt relief require countries to privatize their public health, education, electricity, water and other services. These countries should also end subsidies and trade restrictions that support local businesses, but accept continued subsidies of some G8 companies by the United States and other G8 countries, as well as the erection of trade barriers on imports that threaten G8 industries.

In the book, Perkins repeatedly denies the existence of a "conspiracy." Instead, Perkins carefully discusses the role of corporatocracy.
