God, although considered in Christian doctrine to be both omnipotent and omnipresent, is generally seen as residing above us in heaven.

But if our spatio-temporal perception of where Heaven is changes, as it did in the early 16th century, what is the effect on our perception of where God is?

Does this change lead us to convictions about the legitimacy of pantheism or nihilism? And are these points of view really “scientific”, or are they simply out of common sense?

My lecture is based on chapters 5 and 6 of CS Lewis's The Discarded Image: An Introduction to Medieval and Renaissance Literature. I focus on two of the most significant features of the medieval worldview that the modern era “rejected.” These concepts are also central to Lewis's own writings.

And what about the Elves? Are they like the elves from Disney's Tinker Bell, or do they have other connotations, like those that Tolkien attributes to them in The Lord of the Rings?
