The fourth step is a vigorous and careful effort to discover what the liabilities of each of us have been and are.
I want to find out exactly how, when and where my natural desires warped me.
I want to look frankly at the misfortune this has caused to others and to myself.
By discovering what my emotional distortions are, I can move towards correcting them. Without a willing and persistent effort to achieve this, I can have little sobriety or contentment.
To resolve ambivalent feelings, I need to feel a strong and purposeful sense of self.
Such awareness does not happen overnight, and self-awareness is not permanent. Everyone has the capacity to grow and gain self-awareness through an honest encounter with reality.
When I don't avoid problems but face them directly, always trying to solve them, they become fewer and fewer.
