The words of authority figures can have a lasting impact on a child's life. When these comments are negative, the harmful effects can take years to resolve. As a young girl, Crystal was labeled a behavior problem at school and nicknamed "Crystal Pistol" by her principal. Even today, as an education professional with a doctorate, these negative comments from elementary school adults still matter. Hear Crystal's story and her mission to educate educators about the importance of “critical supportive leadership.” Crystal is a longtime educator who has served as a teacher, administrator, principal, and educational consultant. She graduated Cum Laude from Alabama State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Crystal received her master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton and her Ph.D. in Leadership, Curriculum and Culture from the University of Miami. In 2016, she created Black Girl Leadership, an organization focused on building character and self-image, and creating scholarships and professional connections to support women and girls. Crystal is a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter and friend. She believes, “I can do anything that strengthens me through Christ!” / » This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
