While the Royal Air Force focused on bombing Germany at night, the United States Air Force conducted a dangerous strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany during the day. With each raid, the bombers suffered damage, exploded in mid-flight, fell from the sky in pieces, or crashed in flames. For the Flying Fortresses and Liberator bombers of the 8th and 9th Air Forces, it was a trying time in the deadly skies of war-torn Europe.
