News of the times Episode 307 1837 and 1861
Those pesky in-laws who get in the way of the very purpose of marriage in the first place.
Our first case takes place in 1839. Charles Bartlett, who works as an entertainer in a traveling show, has met and married a young girl of just 18 years old, who brings with her an initial dowry of 45! When her mother dies, she will inherit 50 more!
Unfortunately, the mother-in-law is shot in the back less than a month after the wedding. Charles was the last person to see her alive…
Our second case, dating from 1861, takes place in the peaceful parish of Anglesey, North Wales. Richard Rowlands married the recently widowed daughter of a successful farmer. Unfortunately, the father rather despises Richard and gives him a deadline to pack up his affairs, as well as his new family, and remove himself from his property. He has one day left before he has to leave when, coincidentally, the stepfather is beaten to death on a lonely path while walking home.
Two deadly cases of inconvenience in the laws, it's today's episode of Frightful Fridays.
