Simon Garfield talks about the psychology of our fascination with miniature objects and the interesting design perspective that miniature objects offer us. From miniature models of chairs or televisions to models of villages and trains, he argues that we like the feeling of control in a large and confusing world and that we like to establish a sense of order out of frustration. Simon is the author of 19 non-fiction books, including the best-selling Mauve, Just My Type and On The Map. His study of AIDS in Britain, The End of Innocence, won the Somerset Maugham Prize. He is a trustee of Mass Observation and editor of several books of archival diaries and letters, including Our Hidden Lives and A Notable Woman. His book To The Letter was one of the inspirations for the Letters Live theater shows. He has been a features editor for The Independent and The Observer, and was named editor of the year at Time Out. His most recent book is In Miniature: How Small Things Illuminate The World. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
