One could attribute its box office failure to poor performance or poor marketing, but it seems like it could be down to Orson Scott Card. Orson has been very open about his homophobic views and has actively campaigned against gay rights for years. This caused a boycott of the film. Lionsgate and Harrison Ford expressed that their opinions were not shared with Orson, but that did not stop poor reviews and a boycott from making it a box office failure.
