BOOK DESCRIPTION

A powerful and heartbreaking debut novel about ambition, survival, and our responsibility to each other.

Dixon was once an Olympic-level runner. But he missed the team by two-tenths of a second, and since that pain decades ago, he hasn't let a goal consume him. But when his charming older brother, Nate, suggests that they try to be the first black American men to summit Everest, Dixon can't refuse. The brothers are determined to prove something, to themselves and to each other.

Dixon interrupts his orderly life as a school psychologist, leaving behind disapproving friends and family and a particularly fragile student, Marcus. Once on the mountain, they face extreme weather conditions, a lack of oxygen and precarious terrain. But even though they have prepared for this, Mount Everest is still fickle. And in one devastating moment, Dixon's world is turned upside down.

Dixon returns home and attempts to return to his job, but things have changed: for him and for the students he left behind when he chose Mt. Everest. In the end, Dixon must face the truth about what happened on the mountain and decide who can and cannot be saved. DIXON, DESCENDING offers us a captivating and moving portrait of how we are transformed by our decisions and what it takes to point us, once again, toward hope.
