Does the Grammar-Translation method work for Latin and Greek? (rant)

I will probably offend hardcore Grammar-Translation fans, but I realized that it doesn't do the job it promises. This gives you a false sense of progress, but your true language ability really only comes from the reading and listening you do in the target language. By the way, people can become good at languages during or after taking GT courses, but this is in spite of rather than because of these methods.
