It was one of the few films, all created by Merian C. Cooper at RKO, that were not appropriated for over 50 years due to a legal agreement that gave Cooper full responsibility for the films. Turner Classic Movies has finally secured the rights to the films.
As ruined younger sister Valerie Colby (Lucile Browne) marries Dennis Moore (George Meeker), a more practical Joan (Ann Harding) decides to do the same, not because she's in love, yet to do everything a story about herself. She chooses the unambitious and well-off playboy John Fletcher (William Powell), who owns a thriving shipping line.
She finally spends the night in her apartment. Much to Joan's annoyance, she eventually develops passionate feelings for him. The moment he shows no interest in marrying her, she fuels the problem. She orders her father, Colonel Sam Colby (Henry Stephenson), to find them in a compromised position. John thoughtfully agrees to do the remarkable thing and marry her. However, during their wedding trip, he tells her that he expects her to allow him a separation after a respectable period of time. They choose six months.
Joan urges her better half to check out her private business. Surprisingly, he discovers that he likes her. Since the new Postmaster General (Wallis Clark) is an old friend of her father's, Joan welcomes him to dinner, planning to land an administrative contract for John's organization.
Meanwhile, Valerie strays into the red due to her luxurious way of managing her money and acquiring again and again from her older brother. Joan gives Valerie all she can handle without touching John's money. Finally, she pawns a ring for much of Valerie's 500 needs, but reveals to her that it is the last time.
That day, John finally understands that he adores his other half. Anyway, when she returns home, Valérie goes to John's house despite Joan's good faith and defrauds him by writing him a check. Joan discovers and destroys the check. In her indignation, Valerie proclaims how Joan surprised John with marriage.
