The Harlan Renaissance: Stories of Black Life in Appalachian Coal Towns, with Dr. William Turner

KHS joins Dr. William H. Turner to share "an intimate recollection" of black life in the industrial towns of Harlan County, Kentucky, during the final coal boom years after World War II . Turner reveals the diversity of Appalachia, where families made difficult choices for the future amid the national civil rights movement.

Dr. William H. Turner grew up in Lynch, Kentucky, where his grandfathers, father, four uncles, and older brother worked as coal miners. He holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Kentucky, as well as a master's and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Turner has been a research associate of Roots author Alex Haley and is a faculty member at Winston-Salem State University, Kentucky State University, Berea College, and Prairie View A&M University.
