Former House Speaker Paul Ryan talks GOP, politics, Social Security and taxes
Former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan joins Brian Sozzi and Akiko Fujita to discuss the current state of American politics and the potential effects of the upcoming 2024 presidential election on the economy.
In the House of Representatives, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to oust current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after disagreeing with his efforts to negotiate with Democrats to pass a 1,200 billion financing bill. /“Shame on people who think they should leave a speaker because of political disagreement/,” Ryan says of Taylor-Greene.
He believes his efforts will not succeed and sides with Johnson, crediting him for making a difficult decision and saying, "You can't be good at these jobs unless you're willing to lose them ./" He explains that widespread political dysfunction in Congress alone "adds to the tax of uncertainty/" hits the United States and its economy.
On the issue of debt, Ryan believes that the two 2024 presidential candidates will do nothing to alleviate the problem and are only “demagoguing those who propose solutions”. He warns: “We are heading towards a very predictable crisis. ,/" and emphasizes that social rights reforms should be implemented gradually to reduce the country's growing debt. "It is not possible to get out of this by imposing taxes/", he explains , emphasizing that the debt crisis is expected to be a bigger issue in the current elections.
At odds with Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Ryan told Yahoo Finance he would write in a Republican column on Election Day.
