Some people would be excited about the first magic tournament in thirty years; the first of my life. It's essentially the Supernatural Olympics, a chance for the five magical races – wolves, witches, trolls, fairies and vampires – to try their luck at achieving true power. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work.
Too bad the vampires have rigged every tournament for the past three centuries, maintaining an iron grip over us through dark negotiations, subterfuge, and political betrayal. The ordinary human world doesn't even know we exist, and nothing will ever change.
As an undocumented changeling, I'm forced to pretend to be a low-level witch so they don't strip me of my rights and tear me away from the only family I have left. I just want to stay out of trouble, keep my younger brother in school, and hopefully earn enough to put food on the table.
But all that goes out the window when a vampire enters my life with a murderous smile and an offer I can't refuse: an impossible heist, for a life of stability and comfort.
Picking the lock and untangling the magical tusks is the easy part, even in a gorgeous but really impractical ball gown. Making it out alive without warning the handsome boy scout detective or the six-thousand-year-old vampire who wants to take me home as a party present – now that's a little harder. And then someone had to go and get murdered.
What was meant to be one last job sets off a chain of deadly events that will destabilize centuries of vampire supremacy, uncover a secret that could rewrite the history of all kinds of magic, and reveal a power that could change everything if not is not the case. Don't kill me first.
