Born during the chaotic Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history, Confucius believed that harmony could be promoted and achieved through the example of wise leaders. He was also an innovative teacher and tried to instill his principles of moral excellence among China's elite, but he died without seeing his vision for his nation realized. However, its philosophies would eventually form the foundation of Chinese culture, with many of its traditional principles surviving to this day.
