The story takes place nineteen years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It follows Albus Severus Potter (named after the characters Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape), son of Harry Potter, who is now head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. When Albus arrives at Hogwarts, he is sorted into Slytherin and fails to live up to his father's legacy, which makes him resent his father. Rowling called the play "the eighth Harry Potter story/"

also known as recut trailers, involves collecting multiple pieces of film footage from one or more films and editing them to create a new trailer. Trailer mashups are often created for a film that does not currently exist or to change the genre of an existing film. They are derivative works as defined by the United States Copyright Act 17 USC § 101 and, as such, may be eligible for protection against copyright claims under the fair use doctrine.
Trailer mashups are not only a form of user-generated digital creativity, but also a way to build anticipation for future releases, working in tandem with current movie trailers. Movie trailers are designed to give minimal plot details and to create hype and anticipation. Fan-made trailer mashups allow audiences to make their own cinematic version of current movie sequences. This allows the trailer to focus on a specific actor or part of the film. It might even completely change the plot or genre of the film.

From its premiere, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child received near-universal critical acclaim. The original West End production premiered at the Palace Theater on 7 June 2016. It received a record eleven nominations and won a further nine awards, including Best New Play, at the 2017 Laurence Olivier Awards. of Broadway opened at the Lyric Theater on April 21, 2018. This production received ten nominations and won six awards, including Best Play at the 2018 Tony Awards. An Australian production opened at the Princess Theater in Melbourne on February 23, 2019. second American production opened in San Francisco at the Curran Theater on December 1, 2019. The first non-English production opened at the Mehr! Theater in Hamburg, Germany on December 5, 2021. A Canadian production opened at the Ed Mirvish Theater in Toronto on June 19, 2022. A Japanese production opened at the TBS Akasaka ACT Theater on July 8, 2022. In December 2013, it was revealed that a play based on the Harry Potter series had been in development for about a year, with plans to bring it to the stage sometime in 2016. At the time of the announcement, author JK Rowling revealed that the play would "explore the untold story of Harry's early years as an orphan and outcast". The following May, Rowling began assembling the project's creative team.
