Today's show is awesome…we explore the genius and tragedy that surrounded a pop music classic that was a number one hit multiple times for different artists. Without you. Written and recorded by Badfinger then discovered as a profound piece by Harry Nilsson who loved it and wanted to record it. …But after trying it in many different iterations and fighting with its legendary producer over the right way to approach the song. Harry Nilsson grew to hate the song and did everything he could to sabotage it. It still went to number 1… But then the song became a kind of curse. The co-writers of the Badfinger song were decimated by career and financial difficulties and ultimately ended up committing suicide. Then Harry Nilsson severed his vocal cords and never sang the same way again. Harry then virtually disappeared from the public eye, then died just before planning his return. Then another artist took her version to number 1 in the 90s… Details of this bittersweet rock n' roll serial will be revealed NEXT… on Professor of Rock./"

So… This is one of the most powerful cries of grief ever recorded. Perhaps even more painful is the story of what ultimately happened to the co-authors of the composition that became a masterpiece of human anguish. The song's fate was only realized when a temperamental and relatively unknown artist heard the original version at a party and became obsessed with recording his own version of the captivating ballad called "Without You" . "Without You" was born from the combination of two unfinished songs: a work in progress by Peter Ham, tentatively billed as "If It's Love", and a chorus, without verses, by Tom Evans called "I Can't Live". »

Peter Ham and Tom Evans were the two principals of the BadFinger quintet. Now…Badfinger were a very talented and cool band, but they were vastly underrated and systematically victims of sneaky mismanagement and an imploding label, Apple Records, the record company owned by the Beatles.

Badfinger initially called themselves The Iveys and were the first non-Beatles group to land a recording contract on Apple Records.

They changed their name from The Iveys to Badfinger in 1969. The Fab Four loved Badfinger! Paul McCartney even took the guys under his wing, so to speak. Macca gave Badfinger their first irresistible hit "Come and Get It" and produced the single that reached #4 in the UK and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970:

Badfinger would follow with the Top 10 hit “No Matter What”

Their highest-charting US single, "Day After Day", came next, climbing to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. And their final single "Baby Blue" reached #14 in the US in 1972.
