History Festival 2023 – The Holocaust: an unfinished story
Dan Stone in conversation with Robert Gerwarth.

The Holocaust is the subject of numerous debates, numerous commemorations and numerous representations. But some major aspects of its history have been neglected. Spanning the entirety of the Holocaust and across the globe, this vast history deepens our understanding.

Dan Stone reveals how incomplete the notion of “industrial murder” is: many were killed where they lived, in the most brutal ways possible. He highlights the scale of collaboration across Europe, convincingly arguing that we must stop seeing the Holocaust as an exclusively German project.

It also questions the nature of the trauma caused by the Holocaust and why the suffering of the Jews has not yet been fully taken into account. And he makes clear that genocidal ideology is central to understanding Nazi thought and action, providing an in-depth analysis of its origins.
