The Urban Dictionary defines a shower thought or shower thought as an idea, thought, or concept that first comes to you when you take your morning shower or do another part of your morning routine. Often a revelation, sudden and marked by the inability to remember it later.

Have you ever found yourself struck by the glow while bathing? A revelation in the shower? You're not alone. You are just one of millions of people who have experienced what is commonly called a shower thought. They can appear out of nowhere and range from the banal (“trains are just horizontal elevators”) to the provocative, even genius. The phenomenon has become more widely recognized in recent years, largely thanks to Internet communities that have grown up around the concept. Search for a hashtag on Twitter and you'll be face to face with thousands of random thoughts, whether entertaining or profound.

But what exactly are shower thoughts and why do we have these seemingly fleeting moments of genius when we take a shower?

*** Your Environment ***
Consider your surroundings: they are warm, comforting, and probably familiar. It is a place of relaxation where you can freely let your mind wander amid the scents of your favorite shampoos and soaps.

***Free from distractions***
There's no phone to bother you, no one to interrupt you (usually) and it's time you can be completely alone with your thoughts. All of these factors will also throw a bit of dopamine around your head, which can shake up otherwise dormant (and creative) sections of your brain. It's the perfect place to relax, sing a few songs and think differently.

***Ride the brain train***
Although there's more to do here than a nice steamy shower and pruning fingers. As your body relaxes and you enter into a routine or monotonous thought process, your mind follows suit. Specifically, your prefrontal cortex (where your most complex thinking and planning takes place) relaxes when you're on a sort of autopilot. Think of it as the part of your brain that works when you're deeply focused, or the voice in your head that would stop you from throwing a drink in someone's face (it also moderates your social behavior).

When your prefrontal cortex is relaxed, the rest of your brain, called the default network, kicks into high gear. It's the machinery that lights up when you daydream or let your mind wander. Once this is engaged, new connections and solutions come to light – ones you would normally reject if you were deeply focused. A clear (and clean) head is good for the body.

***No rules***
Timing also plays a role in all of this. Most of us tend to do it in the morning or evening, mainly when we are a little sleepy or tired. Intuition would tell you that being in the dark is bad for creative thinking. But this is not the case. When you're a little sleepy, your brain doesn't filter out distractions or imposed rules as easily. This helps you separate some ideas from others. In other words, shower thoughts come because you're more likely to "think outside the box" or consider more creative avenues.

All of these factors – total comfort, relaxing your mind, and a little mist – inspire you to think creatively, so it's no surprise that some of us have our best thoughts in the shower. If nothing else, it's great evidence for maintaining a healthy bathing routine. Plus, you never know, the next time you wash the dishes, you might have a revelation.
