FOR THE DEFENSE OF WOMEN…..
A 1918 book about women and gender relations. Some call the book progressive while others call it reactionary. Although Mencken does not defend women's rights, he depicts women as wiser in many new and observable ways, while demeaning average men. According to Mencken's biographer Fred Hobson: Depending on the reader's position, he was either a great defender of women's rights or, as one critic called him in 1916, "the greatest misogynist since Schopenhauer", "the high priest of country of those who hate women.

He has commented widely on the social scene, literature, music, prominent politicians and contemporary movements. His satirical report on the Scopes trial, which he nicknamed the "Monkey Trial"
