Although Mencken does not defend women's rights, he depicts women as wiser in many new and observable ways, while demeaning average men. According to Mencken's biographer Fred Hobson: Depending on the reader's position, he was either a great defender of women's rights or, as one critic called him in 1916, "the greatest misogynist since Schopenhauer", "the high priest of country of those who hate women.
