During the American Revolution, citizens of what was then the province of Maine experienced enormous hardship, shifting loyalties, enormous loss of property and land, and dramatic population displacement.
Maine was the scene of intermittent wars for nearly 100 years, beginning in 1675 with King Phillips' War and not ending until 1763, when peace was finally made with the French.
Once the wars ended, the British demanded that Americans contribute to the costs of defense and administration of the expanded empire. They imposed a series of taxes on their colonists, without giving them representation in Parliament. The Maine Patriots were among the first Americans to rebel.
