How to Use a Chain Tool for Chain Installation or Removal
We show you how to use a bicycle chain tool (also called a chain breaker) to change a chain, replace a chain, or install a chain on your road bike, mountain bike, trail bike, or BMX. The method has demonstrated how Shimano, SRAM and most other chains work. However, chain tools vary in whether they can handle 6-8, 9, 10, or 11 speed chains. Train on an old chain that was left over from the last chain replacement. The chain consists of pins (rivets), rollers and plates. We look at the construction of the chain consisting of pins, rollers and plates to better understand the use of chain tools. The chain tool has two parts, one for removing pins and another for loosening a rigid link. Partially removing the correct pin will allow you to break the chain, remove the broken links, and reinstall the chain if you are on the road. Many chains now come with a quick link, but for most 10 and 11 speed bikes this usually requires special tools for quick link removal and replacement (see our videos on using a quick link main). Since a Quicklink tool is not one we usually carry (nor is part of most multi-tools), a chain tool may be the only thing that gets you home if you have a broken chain, if you need to repair it, to solve other chain problems while you are cycling. .
