Vaccines do more than protect against the disease they are designed to protect against. Watch this TEDxAarhus 2018 talk by MD and professor of global health Christine Stabell Benn and learn how hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved each year simply by using existing vaccines more intelligently. Christine Stabell Benn is a physician and professor of global health. By studying the real effects of vaccines in Africa, she discovered that vaccines do much more than protect against the target disease; they have so-called non-specific effects. In most cases, they are accompanied by increased resistance against infections other than the target disease. If we take this into account, we can save hundreds of thousands of lives every year simply by using existing vaccines more intelligently. Christine argues that we should not only study the effects of vaccines on the target infection, but also ask the often-ignored question: what is the impact of vaccines on overall health? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
