At Thanksgiving, another Basalt Blue Sparkle Top Deluxe appeared on Reverb that was advertised as / "The jewel of our collection, a genuine 1974 sparkle top Deluse LP in original condition. Rarely played. No modifications to any so No repairs. Straight neck./" What arrived didn't entirely match that description as there was a pretty bad case of buckle worming and lots of worn areas, but this purchase made me realize something that. I had never seen it documented before. There were (at least) two different versions of this finish! It appears that the earliest ones have a lighter blue with smaller metal flakes and those produced later have a larger flake and a darker shade. Now that I know what to look for, I can see it in all the old photos online. The way the finish ages green with the yellowing clear coat hid this fact for a while. That and the cost to own one is quite high, so you don't normally see more than one in one place. Today was that day. Which do you prefer?

Some other differences include the style of the Gibson logo and the size of the headstock. 1975 was a year of transition for Gibson!
