Diana O'Toole is absolutely on the right track. She will be married by thirty, have children by thirty-five, and move to the suburbs of New York, all the while climbing the professional ladder in the cutthroat world of art auctions. She's not engaged yet, but she knows that her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is about to propose during their romantic getaway to the Galapagos, days before her thirtieth birthday. Just in time.

But then a seemingly distant virus appears in the city, and on the eve of their departure, Finn delivers the news: it's all hands on deck at the hospital. He must stay behind. You should still go, he assures her, because it would be a shame if their entire non-refundable trip was wasted. And so, reluctantly, she leaves.

Almost immediately, Diana's dream vacation goes awry. The entire island is now under quarantine and remains blocked until the borders reopen. Completely isolated, she must venture out of her comfort zone. Little by little, she forms a bond with a local family when a teenage girl with a secret confides in Diana, despite her father's suspicions of outsiders.

Diana finds herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself – and wondering if, when she returns home, she too will have become someone completely different.
