The Taliban have tried to show a softer side, perhaps to contrast with their reputation for barbarism.

The Taliban regained full control of Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, when the United States withdrew after twenty years of war. But the militant group says it has reformed and has even tried to show a softer side, perhaps to contrast with the barbaric scenes of the last time they were in power, from 1996 to 2001.

In the 1990s, women could not work, go to school or leave home without a male guardian. They had to wear the burqa in public. Today, the Taliban say they will respect women's rights within the limits of their interpretation of Islam. They also promised to defend press freedom and adapt to a new, more modern country.

But is “Taliban 2.0” anything other than a clever publicity stunt? On GZERO World, Ian Bremmer explains why people are skeptical and expect more of the human rights abuses and repression from the Taliban that the world witnessed decades ago.
