BOOK DESCRIPTION

The year is 1913, and those who follow the news closely can see that the world is on the brink of war. Jack McColl, a Scottish car salesman with an uncanny ear for languages, always hoped to make a career as a spy. As his trade tours take him from city to city – from Hong Kong to Shanghai, from San Francisco to New York – he moonlights to collect intelligence for Her Majesty's Navy, but British espionage is at its wits' end. in its infancy and Jack only has a limited budget and the very tenuous protection of a boss in distant London. However, he knows that a geopolitical catastrophe is brewing and that this is both the time to prove himself and the moment when his country needs him the most.

Unfortunately, this is also the moment when he begins to realize what his aspiration might cost him. He realizes that his life is at stake when activities in China suddenly escalate, from innocent data collection and informal walks along German military concessions to arrest warrants and stabbings. Meanwhile, a vivacious American suffragist journalist has worked her way deep into his affections, and it doesn't take long for him to realize that his Irish American family may be embroiled in the Irish Republican movement against which the bosses of Jack fight. How to choose between his country and the woman he loves? And would he even be able to make such a choice without losing both?
