Bubbling streams, cascading waterfalls and plunge pools of crystal clear water gushing between the gaps and crevices of gigantic granite boulders surrounded by lush rainforest – this breathtaking paradise is known as the Boulders by the thousands of unsuspecting tourists who visit it every year. But for savvy locals who know its legend, this picturesque place has another, more famous name: the washing machine. It's a special name that many foreigners, like Tasmania's James Bennett, would have liked to know. At least knowing the name and what it implies could have made a huge difference before Bennett decided to venture into its depths, completely unaware of what awaited him below.
On November 30, 2008, James Andrew Bennett, a 23-year-old Tasmanian, came to the Boulders as a tourist. He was an experienced swimmer, a second lieutenant in the Australian Navy who had just been stationed aboard one of their minesweepers, the HMAS Norman. This sunny afternoon, Bennett went alone to the Babinda Boulders, a famous tourist spot in Babinda. It is a small rural town south of Cairns, located in far north Queensland, Australia.
