Louis Alfred Székely (/ˈluːi ˌseɪˈkeɪ/;[2] born September 12, 1967), known professionally as Louis CK (/ˈluːi ˌsiːˈkeɪ/),[a] is an American comedian, actor, and filmmaker.[4] [5] CK has won three Peabody Awards, three Grammy Awards, six Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award as well as numerous awards for The Chris Rock Show, Louie, and his Live at the Beacon stand-up specials. Theater (2011) and Oh My God (2013).[8] In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked CK's stand-up special Shameless number three on its "Divine Comedy: 25 Best Stand-up Specials and Movies of All Time/" list and ranked it fourth on its 2017 list of 50 best. stand-up comics of all time.[10]
CK began his career in the 1990s writing for comedians including David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Dana Carvey, Chris Rock and Saturday Night Live. He also made surrealist short films and directed two feature films: Tomorrow Night (1998) and Pootie Tang (2001). In 2001, CK released his first comedy album, Live in Houston, directly through his website and became one of the first artists to offer direct-to-fan sales of tickets to his stand-up shows and downloads of DRM-free video concerts via its website. .[12] He became prolific, releasing nine comedy albums, often directing and editing his specials as well. These specials include Shameless (2007), Chewed Up (2008), Hilarious (2010) and Oh My God (2013).
He gained notoriety and popularity for his semi-autobiographical FX comedy-drama series Louie (2010–2015), which he created, directed, and starred in. The series received numerous accolades and CK won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy. Series. In 2016, he created and starred in his self-financed web series Horace and Pete, and co-created the shows Baskets and Better Things for FX and voiced the protagonist Max in the animated film The Secret Life of Pets the same year. During this period, he also had supporting roles in films such as David O. Russell's American Hustle, Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine (both 2013), and the blacklisted Hollywood drama Trumbo (2015).
In 2017, he admitted to several incidents of sexual misconduct following the publication of an article in The New York Times. This sparked widespread criticism and caused his 2017 film I Love You, Daddy to be removed from distribution before its release, as well as a halt to his stand-up career. In 2018, he returned to stand-up comedy and in 2019, he announced an international tour. In 2020, CK released a new comedy special, Sincerely Louis CK, on his website, for which he received a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 2021, he embarked on an international comedy tour and released a new comedy special, Sorry, and co-wrote and directed the 2022 film Fourth of July with Joe List.
Louis Alfred Székely[18] was born in Washington, DC, United States[19] on September 12, 1967,[19][20] the son of software engineer Mary Louise (née Davis) and economist Luis Székely. [19][19][19] 21][22] He has three sisters.[23] His father is of Mexican and Hungarian Jewish descent.[19] CK's Jewish paternal grandfather, Géza Székely Schweiger, had immigrated to Mexico from Hungary, and to appease his Mexican wife, they raised their children in the Catholic faith.[24] CK's mother, an American, was Catholic of Irish descent.[19]
When CK was a child, his family moved to Mexico, his father's home country,[19] where his father had earned a degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico before graduating from Harvard.[21] ] CK's native language was Spanish; it was only after they returned to the United States, at the age of 7, that he began learning English.
