Jude the Obscure audiobook
by Thomas Hardy (1840 – 1928)

Eleven-year-old Jude Fawley, inspired by his teacher Mr. Phillotson, who leaves Marygreen for Christminster to pursue university studies, decides to adopt the same course of study for himself. Raised by his great-aunt, he studied hard using old Latin and Greek books sent to him by Phillotson. He trained as a stonemason to enable him to support himself at university. But when he finally arrives in Christminster, he soon discovers that a college education is not easy to obtain for his social status. Upon meeting and falling in love with his cousin Sue Bridehead, his future becomes a series of challenges to his moral, religious, and social beliefs.
