There is a reasonable analysis here:

/"Salthouse Docks, Liverpool/" and /"Night-time/" were both Victorian paintings by John Atkinson Grimshaw. I've edited the last one slightly to fit the format – here's the original:

I have known the night.
I went out in the rain – and came back in the rain.
I passed the farthest city lights.
I looked at the saddest track in town.
I walked past the goalkeeper at his pace
And I looked down, not wanting to explain.

I stood still and stopped the sound of footsteps
When in the distance an interrupted cry
I arrived at houses on another street,

But not to call me back or say goodbye;
And further still, to a supernatural height,
O bright clock against the sky

He proclaimed that the time was neither bad nor good.
I have known the night.
