During the Jurassic, the first birds evolved, but it is still difficult to determine which dinosaur represents the oldest bird. We once thought that Archeaopteryx was the first true bird, but now we think that Archeaopteryx was more of a glider and that the oldest true bird was actually a younger ancestor of Archeaopteryx.
Mammals only became large, diverse and dominant when dinosaurs declined in the late Cretaceous.
